Good Posture is Good Prevention (and Gives You Sore Abs)…

Oh my goodness my abs hurt. Like, wowza hurt. “Why?” you’re asking. “Did you stop being a pansy and finally go to a Pilates class? Are you doing a crunches program? Did you lift a car off the ground for the sheer amusement of it?!?!?! Did you get one of those around the body belt things that promises rock hard abs with little or no exercise!?!??!”

No, no, no (though that would be really cool), and hell no (I’m not that stupid). My reason for my obliques wigging out: I’ve been sitting up straight.

That’s right: sitting up straight. As in hold my body upright against gravity while standing and sitting in the best possible way to have the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities (aka- having good posture).

On Monday I started using the iposture. The iposture “is an intuitive electronic device designed to improve posture. Just over one inch in diameter, the iPosture automatically senses when the body souches, and it alerts the user with brief vibrations to correct it.”

When I first opened the package and attached it to my bra strap I was skeptical. Then, about 10 minutes later, I almost jumped out of my seat, screamed out of surprise, and clasped my chest. Poor Sarcasman freaked out, thinking I was having a stroke. Nope, no stroke: the vibration just scared the crap out of me. Didn’t hurt me, just scared the bejesus out of me!

Since that initial buzz I haven’t had any major tweek outs due to the iposture. It does go off a lot though, signaling me to straighten up. So far, so good. I’ll give you a more in depth report/review after I’ve been wearing it for 30 days so I have a better sense for the product. In the meantime, I’m going to google “abdominal massage” and hope for the best!

Do you have a question about posture? Best exercises to improve your posture? Ergonomic tools that might be helpful?  How weight effects posture? Why is it important? Leave your questions in the comments and I’ll ask them when I interview Dr. Schapps, the inventor of the iPosture, later this month!

This sounds very interesting…I’d be interested to know how Dr. Schapps came up with idea – and then I’d like to try one if you have success with it. I am always slouching at my computer since I sit at my desk 8 hours a day. I catch myself and straighten up, but that only lasts a few minutes, then I’m hunched over again. I think this device would be great – and especially if it works your abs!!! Looking forward to reading your review!

This made me crack up because I could just see you freaking out! That is neat that it works! Yes, your abs do get a work out from sitting up straight that is for sure! I need to work on my posture as well, when I danced I had GREAT posture but now I am a slacker. Let me know how it goes!

Sounds neat. I’ve heard about it before, and I wanted to try it then, too. I’m convinced my posture is so terrible that I don’t even know if I’m capable of sitting up straight.

On my blog I have you on a list of blogs I read in the sidebar, but lately it’s not showing when you post something new. Do you know why that might be?

Never mind. I think I fixed it. ^

I’m thinking of trying this. I need to work on my posture, although weight training helps. I don’t know how much it is cause and effect, but my grandmother had a terrible humpback late in life, and my 60-year-old mother has it now, too, and it’s getting steadily worse. I sure want to avoid that.
