iPosture Review: Finally Sitting Up Straight!

Product: iPosture

Website: www.iposture.com

Description: The iPosture is an intuitive electronic device designed to improve posture. Just over one inch in diameter, the iPosture automatically senses when the body souches, and it alerts the user with brief vibrations to correct it. The iPosture will help you correct your posture the very first day you use it! With time, the iPosture allows the muscles, joints, and nerves to learn and establish new patterns, allowing for long-term results. After several days, you may notice that you can maintain proper posture for longer. After a few weeks, you may be able to keep perfect posture all on your own! Continue to use the iPosture intermittently after this time to maintain your great posture habits.

ipostureTesting Period: I wore the iPosture 28 days out of January. Though they recommend wearing it for 4 hours a day, many days I wore it through work and school (11+ hours). The website recommends initially wearing the iPosture for four hours per day for the first 1-2 weeks as the frequency “will help instill the new habit of correcting your posture”. After this period, they recommend wearing the iPosture once every two or three days to maintain your new posture improvement.

My Review: When I first opened the package and attached it to my bra strap I was skeptical. Then, about 10 minutes later, I almost jumped out of my seat, screamed out of surprise, and clasped my chest. Poor Sarcasman freaked out, thinking I was having a stroke. Nope, no stroke: the vibration just scared the crap out of me. Didn’t hurt me, just scared the bejesus out of me!

Since that initial buzz I haven’t had any major tweek outs due to the iPosture. The buzz is moderate: enough so you notice but it doesn’t feel like a shock or punishment. The first week I used it I had sore abs like whoa.

I noticed after wearing my iPosture a couple days that my clothes seemed to fit better. Just the sheer act of sitting up made a drastic change in my appearance. I felt I had a more respect-producing, confident, competent, vigorous, youthful appearance. This was especially helpful during long, boring meetings at work. The buzzes not only kept me awake but kept me looking engaged and professional.

Pros:

  • It works. It provides the continual behavioral re-enforcement you need to actually make and maintain change.
  • iPosture is small and discreet, yet large enough that you don’t accidentally leave it attached and wash it.
  • iPosture can be worn multiple ways: on a bra strap, necklace, or directly on the skin.
  • Every time you put the iPosture on you “reset” your posture goal. This allows you to make incremental changes to achieve the best posture possible. This also allows you to share your iPosture with family members in the future.

Cons:

  • The device uses batteries. While, with your order, you get a lifetime supply of batteries for free, the manual removal and replacement of them is annoying to me.
  • The device is not waterproof. This could spell trouble for individuals living in rainy regions and extremely excessive perspires.
  • I don’t like the clip the iPosture has. It’s a stiff, metal clip that when stretched does not bounce back to its beginning gripping capabilities. I wear serious bras for my serious boobs and of them have the thicker, padded straps. Once I put the iPosture on one of these bras it no longer would clip and stay on my skinny strap. Instead it would slide down/off without re-enforcement (tape). This wasn’t a huge issue for me as most of my bras have thick straps but I still think this is a weakness in the product.

Will I Continue Using: YES! I will especially make sure to strap it on before work and important events. I have found I feel more professional and confident when having good posture and that this device helps insurmountably with maintaining posture throughout the day. In addition to feeling more confident, good posture has numerous other health benefits including: optimal organ and muscle function, optimal biomechanics for the best possible muscle performance, fewer upper and lower back problems, and a flatter and stronger stomach. If those benefits don’t excite you, nothing will. Those are all benefits I am willing to keep using the iPosture to help me attain.

Would I Purchase: I’ve noticed the price fluctuate over the past two months. Its listed regular price is $89.95. It’s currently being sold at the New Year Resolution Special price of $74.95. BeforeChristmas they had another special and had the iPosture price set at $49.95. The cost includes the option to get a free lifetime-supply of EZ Stick Adhesive Patches and batteries for the iPosture.

I would definitely purchase the iPosture for $49.95. I’d cringe a little and maybe shell out $74.95 for it. And, while it works, for some reason the $89.85 price tag makes it almost out of reach. If I had an unexpected flux of money (gift, tax return, etc) I would purchase it but without a monetary boost I probably would pass and wait for it to go on sale. What can I say, it’s a recession people.

  1. I would love to win this! My mother would always remind me to sit up straight. I try to be more conscious of my posture, but I inevitably end up a little slouched. On the second day of my new job last June, by boss told me I should sit up straight more, it’ll make me look more professional. :( It’s a hard habit to break!

  2. I had never heard of the iPosture before you mentioned it on this blog. Your review is great. I’m very interested in trying one out for myself, and would love to be entered into the contest to win one. Thank you for sharing this great new gadget with us!

  3. Oh my gosh, I too have never heard of iPosture, so I think it would be awesome for me! It forces you to have good posture! LOL

  4. I have been eagerly awaiting your review! I really need this because I need the constant reminder that I should sit up straight. I have had major lower back pain this week, which I attribute to my stance and sleeping position, and am up for anything to help me stand tall and straight!

  5. I have horrid posture and maybe sitting up straight consistently would make me feel better, physically and emotionally. Also, hi Kelly!

  6. This is the link to the post on my blog about your fantastic review and contest.

I need the iPosture because I have scholiosis (spelling?) between my shoulder blades and it causes me to hunch forward when I am working at the computer (8+ hours per day). This is bad for my long term health, but also a hard habit to break.

  7. http://emmycantbemeeko.livejournal.com/625850.html

And I was impressed with how well it seems to have worked for you and I want to try it. Maybe my constant upper-back tension and soreness would go away if I actually sat up straight!

  8. This is such a neat concept; I hadn’t heard of the iPosture before. I would really like to win one of these to improve my posture and appear taller- I’m only 5 feet tall so I need every bit of extra height I can get!

Also it would be so much fun to review this on my blog.

I just tweeted about this, too… but I did it as a retweet so more people will be likely to see it :)

Thanks for the great review of it!

  9. I would like to win one of these, and I’ll tell you why. When I graduated from high school, someone recorded the whole thing and we were able to purchase copies of the video afterwards. I had been trying really hard to have good posture in my “bared back and shoulders” dress, and I thought I had succeeded. However, when I watched the video, I was horrified to see that my posture had been terrible! My shoulders were hunched and the blades were sticking out in the back, and my neck was thrust forward. Obviously I’m not capable of achieving good posture on my own.

Now, that was 13 years ago, but now, especially with the extra weight on me, I keep having problems with my lower back/hips. I went to the physiotherapist, and he said it’s a minor disk problem and was probably caused by incorrect posture. Also, having bad posture exacerbates it. This little gadget could possibly solve the back problem I’ve been suffering with for the last 2 months!

  10. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this, but it sounds like what I’ve been looking for!! I

work at a computer most of the day, and its so easy to slink into a slouch as the day goes on. The worst part is you don’t even notice! I’ve considered buying one of those contraptions you wear under your clothes, but half the time they look so bulky and uncomfortable!! I would definitely love to win this (as I can’t really afford the $50-90). Not only would my back thank me, but I’m sure I’d look a few pounds lighter!

Unfortunately I do not have a twitter account, so I’ll have to settle for three entrees. Let’s hope luck is on my side!

  11. I have wanted one of these for ages! Here is the link to my blog!

  12. I would love to win this! I’m really tall (5′ 11″), so think I began slouching long ago to appear shorter (not that it works!). Even my Wii Fit “talks” to me about my poor posture. I have a few back problems, so hopefully better posture would help that (it certainly wouldn’t hurt). And, I appreciated your comments about the sore abs. That’s my body part that needs the MOST work, so if this could help that would be terrific.

I blogged about your contest my blog! Thank you for doing the giveaway!

  13. I need one because since working at home I slack and slouch while I work with my laptop in the strangest places and positions! :D I agree, the higher price makes me take pause. Makes me wish I would have investing in one when I saw it for $49!

  14. This sounds absolutely perfect for me. All my life I have had poor posture, mainly due to my Scoliosis. I’ve taken action to correct some causes of my bad posture; I had a breast reduction a few years ago. But, I still experience back pain because of the way I am naturally built. Every so often I’ll catch myself and try to force myself to use correct posture, but I always slump back. It’s so hard to break poor posture when it is so natural. Especially when you get really focused at work.

This device sounds perfect because it actually trains you to use correct posture. So instead of just “I need to sit up straight” being a passive thought, it can be an active thought.

Even if i don’t win, thank you for bringing light to something that could help me out a lot in the future.

  15. About 6 years ago I started doing pilates and within a few weeks I was holding my self better, sitting up straighter and noticing all of the effects you mentioned. Then I stopped doing pilates and it all fell away. Now it’s a regular occurrence to have back pain at the end of the day (well usually about 3 hours into the day) and I have a hard time remembering to sit up straight when I’m at the computer 8 hours a day. Would love this product!!!!!

  16. Hi Kelly! Thanks for reviewing this AND the giveaway. I remember when you first wrote about this and have been waiting to hear more.

I’d love to win this. I slouch all the time, so much so that I don’t even always realize that I’m doing it. I think correcting that is a really important thing for me to do physically and emotionally. Standing tall conveys self-confidence and I think that would help me both professionally and personally. It would probably also help with my shoulder issues. :)

  17. While I admit I am a little skeptical (who wouldn’t be at first, right?) I also acknowledge that my posture likely leads to my lousy moods and general feelings of blah lately. Not only that, but it looks horrible and causes back pain!

Anything to help with one or all of these is worth at least checking out, right?

  18. Hi Kelly-
It would be great to win the iPosture to help me be more mindful of my posture. Over the last couple of years, I’ve slowly gained over 50 pounds. And well…my top got a lot…er…heavier. To put it bluntly my girls are weighing me down and I’ve developed a pretty bad slouching habit. While I have begun to work out to address the real problem, it would be great to have a device to help remind this former ballet dancer to sit and stand up straight again!

    Thanks!
    LC

  19. Hello!

I would love to win the iPosture also because I, too, have horrible posture. It doesn’t help at all that I have just started my first desk job–sitting in front of the computer all day makes by back incredibly sore by the evening. This would be an awesome device for positive reinforcement!

    Thanks,

    Taylor

  20. Hey there,

The iPosture needs me as much as I need it to prove to anyone who is skeptical about it working for back pain.

I used to have a sedatary job as a legal secretary, then an Executive Assistant and I have always slouched but am better now than I used to be but still slouch I know.

I have a bad neck, back, knee, ankle and feet from several unfortunate accidents over the years but primarily a hit on the head with a bookshelf, books, and a mantle clock which cut my head and glass broke in it crashed down on my head and I had non stop headaches for 6 years. I also started having neck and back problems but they subsided somewhat until 1999, when I was rearended by a jeep with a steel grate in front which started sciatica down my left leg and more intense neck and back pain. I struggled with that for the next few years seeing chiropractors, physical therapists, you name it.

I was working in retail in 2004, when I tripped over a box of stuff that should not have been in the doorway, and flew across the floor face forward on my stomach with my left knee hitting the concrete and injuring my back further and sciatica. I now have a torn cartilage on my left knee that was not found for 3 years and now I have osteoarthritis in both knees but severely in my left. I was advised surgery was not an option but it causes me great pain. The torn cartilage caused a neuroma on my left foot that have had numerous injections which didn’t help either so I have bad feet due to inflammation due to my lack of exercise and the rest of my life, and my left one also has the painful neuroma that I cannot hardly walk on or wear shoes.

Prior to that fall, I walked nearly 8 miles 3 times a week and 4 miles 1 to 2 times a week and now I can’t do anything.

In 2005, I had to leave the state I lived in and loved and move back home to Iowa because I have been unable to work since 2005 due to all of my physical and mental issues. I have atrophy all along my left side and cannot seem to get on a workout program because something is always hurting but I have been seriously looking into yoga DVDs and think I will try that.

So, one must think I am just dreaming all of this up; no, I am actually living it and my back and neck are so weak that I cannot walk very far, don’t go out in the cold, and my life has been taken away from me at 40 but I kept on until the last accident. I am now 49, but feel 149.

I first heard about the iPosture the other day on thedoctorstv.com and would love to have one.

I would love to win this as I need a jump start. I have no medical insurance and am awaiting a Social Security hearing which I have already waited over 2 years for so I only have my faith to keep me going until I get some help or a miracle. Thank you for listening. I sure would love to win this! Thank again!

    Dianna
